India’s solar imports rose by 641 percent in 2021

In 2021, India imported solar cells and modules worth $3.52 billion, an increase of 641 percent compared to imports of $475.78 million in 2020. »The imports soared as the industry started to recover from the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the delayed projects resumed construction activity,« says Mercom India Research in a report on its latest figures.China was the largest exporter of solar modules and cells to India in 2021, with a market share of nearly 90.14 percent, followed by Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore with 6 percent, 1.47 percent, 0.71 percent, and 0.65 percent, respectively. In 2020, China’s market share in India’s solar imports was 84 percent.The country’s exports increased by 58 percent from $84.16 million in 2020 to $133.36 million in 2021. The United States continued to be the largest market for solar exports from India in 2021, but the market share fell from 79 percent in 2020 to 75.3 percent in 2021, says Mercom.
