Electricity generation from renewables has predominantly replaced gas-fired rather than coal-fired power plants in Europe over the past year. This is the conclusion of the sixth annual report by the British think tank Ember, which analyzes electricity trends in the EU. This is a paradigm shift, the authors say, which is mainly due to high gas prices. As a result, CO2 emissions have fallen only half as fast as needed to meet the 1.5-degree target, according to the analysis. Ember therefore proposes that the decommissioning of coal-fired power plants be regulated by law so as not to jeopardize European climate targets. The study »European Electricity Review 2022« is available for free download on the Ember website.
